Legendary Naarm duo Strange Talk have finally released their new EP ‘Luna’; 5 tracks of expansive synth-pop including previous singles ‘Vanilla Sigh’, and title track ‘Luna’.
Leaping onto the scene in the early 2010s, the bands previous records ‘Cast Away’, ‘E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N’, and ‘Speech Therapy’ garnered critical acclaim and earned them a dedicated fan base around the world. On ‘Luna’ the band have evolved immensely since their early indie club-filler days, whilst still keeping the same energy that fans know and love.
The EP was written during an extensive trip the band took throughout Stockholm, London and Tokyo – with each track drawing from their inspiring journey. As explained by the band, “Luna is more than just an EP; it’s a sonic postcard of our travels, the people we met, and the musical landscapes that shaped us this past year”.
This nomadic process has lead to stylistic variety across the EP; From the guitar-charged indie on the title track ‘Luna’ to moody 80s inspired synth pop on ‘Vanilla Sigh’ and bass-driven grooves on ‘Cool Romancing’ – ‘Luna’ shows off the many different facets to Strange Talk’s sound.
A clear highlight from the EP is track 3 ‘Hologram’; the most dance floor-ready of the bunch, building pressure throughout its run time with a deep, pulsing bassline and atmospheric synths.
“When writing and recording this song, we envisioned a club-like scene, with smoke, strobe lights and a flickering ‘Hologram’ of love – It was our way of creating a type of RnB/Dance track.”
