Tasmania’s Lennon Wells are no strangers to making sacrifices for their music. It’s an inherent choice living in one of the most southern places in the world; members must up & leave when opportunities on the mainland arise. Today they share their new single ‘Coming Home’.
A track about just that, it sees Ben Wells discuss the thoughts & emotions mulling through his head on return from an interstate trip; the first bit of extended time away from his daughter. Inspired by this, ‘Coming Home’ was penned as an ode to anyone missing their loved ones back home, their kid, friend, brother or sister.
Working out of Chapel Studios (Jeff Martin, Christopher Coleman, Little Island) in Austin Ferry, a town 30 minutes north of Hobart, Lennon Wells originally had ‘Coming Home’ structured as a ballad. Once playing it through, they realized it wasn’t invoking the feelings nor sound they were looking for, so a restructure across a three hour period ensued, landing on the format for the track heard today.
Mixed by Alistair Campbell, alongside singer Ben Wells, ‘Coming Home’ was then handed off to Melbourne’s Joe Carra at Crystal Mastering (The Teskey Brothers, Tash Sultana, San Cisco) for completion. The track also features Ben Wells’ adorable daughter at the start; introducing the track in her own words.
“I rewrote coming home recently after returning from a short trip interstate – the first time I’d spent an extended time away from my daughter. It got me thinking about times I’d been traveling overseas and how my parents would have felt about that. It made me emotional to think there might be a time when I won’t see my daughter for months on end. I guess this song is for anyone that is missing the people back home or missing the kid or friend or brother or sister that’s away overseas.” Ben Wells
“When we went into the studio to record Coming Home the song was structured like a ballad, with minimal drums and a soft piano line. After playing through it a few times we realized it didn’t really have our vibe, so we basically restructured the whole song in a couple of hours”

With a new song in tow, Lennon Wells will be bringing this track to life, not just in words, but actuating the themes of travel, leaving loved ones & missing home, with a 10 date Australian tour across July & August. Celebrating ‘Coming Home’ as well as their forthcoming ‘I Need To Feel Something’ EP, they will be showcasing the raw, high paced & rock ‘n’ roll form of Lennon Wells, reminiscent of an era past that the band refuse to let go.
Starting in Wollongong, the band will be headed up to Sydney, before a trio of shows across Tasmania, then ducking back to the mainland & hitting Geelong, Melbourne & Adelaide to round out the dates.
“We’re so pumped to go on this tour, by far the biggest thing we’ve ever done. We’ve been developing our live show over the last 3 years to the point where we’re excited for people to see it. On top of that we’ve got some absolutely unreal local bands in each spot that are coming along for the ride. We’re really quite proud of the fact we’ve been able to pull this all together”
Dave Lee
“The need to feel something is a collection of songs written and re-written over the last 5 years. The underlying concept being the importance of acknowledging how you feel and accepting that it’s ok to be comfortable in your feelings, both good and bad. We wanted to make a record that represented us as we are live, high energy and real, so every song was one full take and then we just overdubbed vocals and percussion. We felt like it was important for us not to be hiding behind a million overdubs. We can’t wait for people to hear the growth in the band.” Ben Wells
Lennon Wells have rapidly made a name for themselves across Tasmania, as well as the rest of Australia, with a start sharing stages with The Murlocs, Slowly Slowly, The Jungle Giants & more. With a reputation for a roaring and frenzied live show, the band landed slots on festivals Party In The Paddock, Great Escape, as well as a slot at the 2021 TSL Grand Final performing in the middle of UTAS Stadium.
Having landed support from tastemaker triple j for previous singles ‘Comparisons’, ‘Beast On My Back’, & ‘How Does It Feel’, the band quickly racked up 60,000+ streams across DSP’s for their debut EP. With plans for a trio of singles across 2023, ‘Coming Home’ is the second of that set, with Lennon Wells intent on putting their heads down, touring hard & wowing audiences to prove themselves as one of Australia’s best live acts.
