South Summit shines with ‘Just Like You’; a track of admiration

Ahead of their national tour kicking off this weekend, rising Perth band South Summit introduce audiences to their feel-good track of autumn ‘Just Like You’, their first release since partnering with Virgin Music Australia.

Inspired by their role models growing up, ‘Just Like You’ captures the effortless feeling of ‘cool’ given off by those you looked up to – whether a big brother, cousin, friend or family member.

Vocalist Isaiah Reuben explains “Just like you is about me growing up in a world where I felt like I needed to prove myself. All I wanted to do was look and sound like my older brother. He was definitely one of my idols in my life who I looked up to, and he taught me a lot of what I know now. Everyone can relate to this in one way or another, since we all have people that we look up to, whether it’s in our family or not. Being a young-un I knew that if I copied the blueprint he laid out, I’d be as cool as him”.

Collaborating again with Perth producer Dave Parkin (Tired Lion, Spacey Jane, Bob Evans), who has now become a staple of the South Summit sound, the band brought brighter & happy-go-lucky sonics to the instrumentation in this session, showcasing a lighter & more sentimental side to the five-piece.

With bouncy guitar rhythms, ad-libbed vocals & jangly percussion ‘Just Like You’ is as breezy & carefree as it is precise; carrying feelings of warm days & great memories with it.

“The riff, chords and general vibe came about so quickly that we’re not even sure how exactly it started. For a while it stayed as just a small unfinished verse and riff section of a song, it didn’t even make it onto the list of songs we wanted to record next. But when we were in the studio jamming all the possible songs to record, we loved the way it sounded, so we spent the rest of our time writing the rest of the song then and there.”
