meadowhip releases soulful single ‘Over’

‘Over’ sees Wollongong’s meadowhip emerging from a chrysalis of self-doubt, her cool facade cracking to reveal a gentler, more intimate side of an artist more in tune with herself and her music than ever before.

The rawness of this single, pulled from her forthcoming debut EP ‘Ruckus’, out November 29th, sets the stage for an honest reflection and her most refined work to date fusing introspective and irreverent lyrics with woozy alt-R&B, pop and soul. Fans of Solange, Kehlani and H.E.R., and closer to home with Felivand, Liyah Knight and Beckah Amani will resonate with meadowhip’s lush vocals.

meadowhip is the solo project of singer-songwriter-poet Cara Walkam who – after a major hemorrhagic stroke in 2019 – decided to breathe through the self-doubt rather than let it consume her. Since then she has pursued creativity in every facet of her life, including making as much music as she can.

“This is potentially the most sincere song I’ve written as meadowhip. And in some ways I feel a bit reluctant to release a track that isn’t at least tinged with some sarcasm or self-criticism. I think I’m not entirely comfortable expressing myself so earnestly or directly, particularly in the context of a solo project. I feel a bit exposed.” meadowhip

meadowhip’s voice bends around gossamer guitar licks while ambient layered vocal textures weave throughout. Backed with well-placed synths and shimmering harmonies, ‘Over’ offers a gentle champagne fizz. Portraying the common experience of personal growth and transition, this deeply personal ode to transformation is wrapped in warmth, beauty and a gentle magic.

“Over is about breaking old habits and breaking up with my old self… the old self chose what was safe, easy and what seemed like “the right thing” to do. The new me takes more risks, lives more creatively and embraces the unpredictability of life.” meadowhip

meadowhip’s commitment to her music has seen her create an impressive resume. This year alone, she has performed at The Spiegeltent, Laneways Live Festival, Vivid Palate with Good Pash, North Gong Sunday Sessions with South Summit, To Be Honest Fridays with DENNIS and BIRDEE alongside a number of other shows.

Beyond this, her music has received praise from Women in Pop (Australia), CLOUT Magazine (UK), IGGY Magazine (France) and Tinnitist (Canada) and on radio throughout Australia (including on triple j, FBi, 4ZZZ, 2SER and Radio Adelaide) and internationally.

Recorded at The Artist Studio in Sydney, ‘Over’ was produced by the formidable Chelsea Warner (Liyah Knight, Anieszka, ANGE), Sydney based producer, songwriter, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist. Rounding out the team was mixing by Nicolas Mendoza (Onefour, Loretta, Pania) and mastering by Kelly Hibbert (J Dilla, Little Dragon, Jordan Rakei).

meadowhip’s debut EP ‘Ruckus’ is out November 29th and is poised to be a sonic journal of her pieces of transformative life-changing experience. It navigates experiences of self, love and life through soulful, alt-r&b, electro-pop and jazz.
