Joel Leggett releases ‘Should’ve Known Better’, announces upcoming album, Water Sports

After a very exciting 2024 which saw a string of successful releases followed by his stunning third studio album Don’t Wait, Central Coast musician Joel Leggett returns now with his first release of the new year; an upbeat single titled ‘Should’ve Known Better’! Focusing on some difficult themes of regret, accountability and transformation, Joel’s new song carries a sentiment of new beginnings– of acknowledging the times that we “should’ve known better” in order to get on with the present:

“‘Should Have Known Better’ is a reflection on the weight of hindsight and the regret that comes with not listening to the people who love and care for us. It’s about the nightmares that follow us from past decisions—the moments when we realise, too late, that the warnings we ignored were meant to protect us. This song captures the raw emotion of owning those mistakes, feeling the weight of regret, and the internal struggle to come to terms with the consequences. It’s a journey of realizing that the hardest lessons often come with the most painful realisations.”  JOEL LEGGETT

A Transformation of Sound

An indie surf rock track which confronts these tricky themes with a gorgeously sunny disposition, ‘Should’ve Known Better’ bears a sense of transformation in its sound, as well as in its lyrical content. Entering this next era with a whole new sound and approach to making music that feels true to himself and his artistry, Joel expressed:

“I originally came up with the idea for ‘Should Have Known Better’ in my home studio with my lead guitarist, Jason Cole. We were jamming around some ideas, and the song started to take shape. From there, I brought it to the band, and we really started to develop the sound together. After that, we took the song to The Grove Studios, where we worked with producer Izaac Wilson to fine-tune everything. We wanted to blend influences from classic Australian bands that have always inspired me, and Izaac really helped us capture that raw, authentic vibe. JOEL LEGGETT

Alongside the new single, Joel has announced the approach of his upcoming fourth studio album, set to be titled Water Sportsexpected later this year. The album will see Joel further explore this new sound and vibe through a collection of brilliant and moving tracks.

Also set to follow ‘Should’ve Known Better’ is a duo of intimate launch shows in NSW, including dates in both Sydney and Newcastle!
