In a time where routine halted and hours stretched to months inside, Romanie channeled her feelings of claustrophobia and sleep (or lack thereof) for the perfectly parceled single ‘Hallucinating’.
Written in the midst of one of Melbourne’s many lockdowns, she trades the jangling guitar riffs and chilled pop vocals of previous single ‘Anthony’ for louder, punchy instrumentation and confident vocals, sacrificing none of the charm.
“I really just wanted to capture the fun we had whilst recording – some of my greatest inspirations like Big Thief and Wet Leg do the same thing where you can almost hear the artists smiling on a recording.” Romanie
Witty and warm, Romanie’s passion for songwriting was ignited at a School of Song workshop in June 2021. The middle of yet another lockdown in Melbourne, Romanie looked to her inverted routine and new, confusing normal for inspiration.
“Hallucinating was the second song we started recording in the studio and I remember telling Gormie I wanted it to sound like trash. We just looked at each other and started laughing – we both knew exactly where we were headed and started making the weirdest sounds on guitar and bass.”Romanie
Consolidating past eras of guitar pop, Romanie keeps giggles, jangles and general background chatter in the mix; she brings a sense of fun-bordering-on-mania to the mix.
To record the single, she again teamed up with producer Alex O’Gorman (Angie McMahon, BATTS) with Romanie also co producing the track. Closing out the team was mastering by Isaac Barter (Alex The Astronaut, Didirri).
Romanie is quickly establishing herself as a force to be reckoned with in both the Melbourne and broader Australian music scene.
With editorial playlisting across Spotify and Apple Music, her loveable sound has also found a home on national and community radio across the country with support from cherished stations like FBi, Edge Radio, triple j, JOY FM, Radio Adelaide, 2SER and more.
Beyond this, she has garnered high praise from industry tastemakers such as Milky, Music Feeds, Scenestr, She Makes Music, MTV, and RAGE all of who support the burgeoning career of a talented and dedicated musician.
Active in her community, Romanie has gained momentum and carved out a dedicated fan base playing the Macededon Ranges Music Festival as well as notable supports for Woodlock at The Gasometer, Grand Pine at The Curtin, Velvet Bloom at The Nightcat, Kaitlin Keegan & Mature Themes at The Retreat.
In support of the release of ‘Hallucinating’, Romanie will be playing as the headline act at The Northcote Social Club for their Social Sanctuary series.
