The Tryouts release debut EP ‘Nothing Bad is Ever Going to Happen

Australian Chelsea Reed met Canadian David Macmichael when living overseas. At the end of a tour together through French Canada together they faced a painful fork in the road spurred by an expiring Visa – to part ways and never see eachother again or follow their hearts and marry.

Without hesitation David agreed and after moving to Australia to wait out the pandemic, they fell in love with their new life and together, they explored the music that started it all.

Their debut EP ‘Nothing Bad is Ever Going To Happen’ recounts feelings of love, loss and the passage of time and narrates their unique and exciting origin story.

The Tryouts are Chelsea Reed (Drums/Vocals) and David Macmichael (Guitar/Vocals) and are the latest Australian-based indie-pop duo that will remind you of frontrunners San Cisco, The Jungle Giants, Wafia and Kira Puru.

“Nothing Bad is Ever Going to Happen is a collection of songs we’ve been working on since forming. It covers a range of styles we incorporate as a two piece, and covers autobiographical themes of heartache, rejection, mental health, and slacking off while life passes you by.”

The EP Features previously released single ‘Washer’ which, after a premiere with Music Feeds, garnered praise from community radio tastemakers such as FBi, JOY FM, RTR FM, 4ZZZ, CHY FM, 2SER,  Central Coast Radio, Coast FM, 89.7FM and 97.9FM just to name a few.

Accompanying this are 4 unreleased tracks. ‘It Is What It Is’ sets the scene for the dynamic between the pair and features rock guitars, playful vocals and complementary drums that packs equal parts power with refinement. ‘What’s It Gonna Be’, showcases Chelsea’s vocals with a southern tinged western guitar that sees Chelsea sing with more of a strut and swagger lamenting the indecisiveness of beginning relationships and living abroad.

Following this sees David take the lead on ‘Wolf At The Door’, who bluntly confronts the transience of life and gains a newfound perspective. Closing out the EP is ‘Curtains’, a slowed-down promise of love showing the strength and commitment between the two.

Recorded at Rancho Relaxo Studios by Shaun Gaida (The Mountains, East Journey, Tiger Widow). The track was then mixed and produced by Jack Moffitt (The Preatures, Isabella Manfredi) and mastered by Andrew Edgson (Matt Corby, 5 Seconds of Summer, The Kite String Tangle) at 301 Studios.

“Getting to work with Jack Moffitt was such a treat.  He approached the songs as they deserved to be treated with a minimalistic clean style of production that leaned into the bands strengths.”The Tryouts

This release is accompanied by a debut inaugural tour which sees the duo travelling to Brisbane, Newcastle, Sydney, Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide (full details below)

“Our very first Australian tour is very exciting especially for David who has never been to any other major cities! Stops include Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Canberra.”
