The Tryouts hit the ground running with playful debut single ‘Washer’

The Tryouts have an origin story that rivals the plot of a Netflix-special.

Both based in Toronto, Chelsea hired David to accompany her on a tour through French Canada. They knew each other a little prior to this, but by the end of the tour their feelings couldn’t be ignored. In a burst of passion, Chelsea asked David to marry her or never see her again as her visa was running out. David happily and ridiculously agreed.

Then, in a wild attempt to escape the claustrophobia of Toronto during the pandemic, they made the desperate move to Australia in search of a warmer place to wait out the mayhem and start their new life.

Together they fell in love with Australia, their new life, and the music that started it all. The rest is history.

Filled to the brim with joie-de-vivre, this confident yet playful single is a fantastic introduction to the latest Australian-based indie-pop duo will remind you of frontrunners San Cisco, The Jungle Giants, Wafia and Kira Puru.

The Tryouts set the tone for future releases with playful lyrics, loveable melodies and energies that bounce effortlessly between the pair. It’s easy to mistake this duo for life-long friends – their voices meld together seamlessly, in only a way longevity can spawn.

‘Washer’ is a song that recounts the very first moment the met on a songwriting trip to LA,  the compatibility between them was so instantaneous and unexpected that one late night jamming session perched atop an old washer and dryer led to the genesis of their debut single ‘Washer’.

“We were staying in an airbnb and they had an old washer and dryer out in the backyard where we had a guitar and some drinks. It wrote itself.” The Tryouts

“With The Tryouts we wanted to challenge ourselves to making a band that could be serious without taking itself too seriously by combining our styles and approaches as songwriters.  Like usual I’d say we failed miserably” David Macmichael, The Tryouts.

‘Washer’ chronicles the vicissitudes of youthful relationships with a playful call and response woven throughout. They expertly capture that hard to describe feeling of unconcerned indifference that not-so-perfect 21st century relationships can elicit within you with lyrics such as,

“All that I long fors a long ride in tandem
Everything you want is completely random
I want a home for us to move into
Semi-detached cause it matches your values”

Recorded at Rancho Relaxo Studios by Shaun Gaida (The Mountains, East Journey, Tiger Widow, Jones Rival). The track was then mixed and produced by Jack Moffitt (The Preatures, Isabella Manfredi) and mastered by Andrew Edgson (Matt Corby, 5 Seconds of Summer, The Kite String Tangle) at 301 Studios.

Its clear the band take their craft seriously, enlisting the involvement of seasoned industry professionals to bring their vision to life, all whilst Tryout-ifying the whole process “Hands down the funnest writing and recording sessions I’ve ever had, Jack Moffitt was a dream to work with and his bass playing shaped the whole feel of the songs”David Macmichael, The Tryouts.
