With fresh & glistening sonics, LAURA MAC have returned with new single ‘Don’t Know What I’m Thinking’, marking a shift in sound for the Queensland duo, trading indie-rock for quirky & sharp guitar-pop.
As charming & alluring as ever, singer Laura Machlachlan retains the luscious melodies of previous single ‘Garage Full of Dreams’, with band & Zac Connelley now adding dance rhythms, jangly guitars and jaunting pop synth melodies to create ‘Don’t Know What I’m Thinking’. Reminiscent of Australian favorites Confidence Man, Eves Karydas & G Flip, the duo have channeled their love for those all night parties, good friends & celebrating every chance they get, to build a track that will fill dancefloors every single night.
“Party, disco, dance – we’re just having fun with it! All our songs have a different vibe but I feel like we’ve kept our own unique sound. DKWIT is staying up all night partying and loving every second of it. Celebrate every chance you get, party with your mates and dance ‘til you drop… High 5!!” Laura Maclachlan, LAURA MAC
Working once again with the prolific Luke Palmer (Dead Letter Circus, Golding, Boo Seeka), the duo were able to mold a demo written on their bright red party bus, into the dancefloor anthem heard today.
Recorded at Palmer’s studio in Clontarf, the duo headed to Ian Peres (Wolfmother) home studio to get help with tracking key & organ for the song, with the legend also putting a final touch on programming to finish off the ‘Don’t Know What I’m Thinking’. A collaborative effort featuring LAURA MAC’s friends, adding the final touches to a track that celebrates good times & high-fives with those you love.
“The original idea for this song was one minute of music sent to us by a good friend of ours. I heard it once and immediately knew what the hook/chorus was going to be. Couple of hours later Zac had arranged a whole song. Couple of drinks later we’d written and recorded all of the vocals. It just poured out of us.. it didn’t take long at all. It’s true that writing about what you know is the easiest thing to do and it’s worked a charm for us so far.”

Alongside the shiny new single, is a neon-lit and bubbly (literally) music video for ‘Don’t Know What I’m Thinking’. Filmed at the duo’s local car wash in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, they invited a stack of friends down to dance, boogie & shake along to the track, whilst getting their car sparkly clean.
Filmed & directed by Colin Jeffs (Jesswar, Yours Truly, Casey Barnes) it was a chance for LAURA MAC to illustrate the good vibes & high-energy of the track, alongside some of their closest friends. Fluorescent lit & sultry, the music video adds another layer of sass to the track.
With LAURA MAC formed during the height of COVID restrictions, the duo have found themselves itching to perform and introduce Australian audiences to the energy & bounce of their live show.
Finally, that time has arrived, as they debut LAURA MAC alongside British India on Saturday, May 21st at Solbar in Maroochydore. Not content with just one show, they’ve strung together performances in Brisbane & Melbourne to announce their debut tour & first performances both at home & interstate.
“We’re mad keen to get started! LAURA MAC was born during peak covid restrictions in 2021 so playing live (and touring!) seemed a whole world away. The fact that we’ve got our first live show in May this year supporting Aussie music legends British India is so wild. Beyond excited. Crying. Screaming. Shaking.. Haha! And we’re booked to play in Brisbane with Sectionals at Greaser and Melbourne with our good buddies Tim Smyth & Holytrash. Bring it on baby!”
