King Blue release scintillating single ‘Breathless’ & announce Perth single launch show

Inspired by their collective life experiences, Perth indie-groovers King Blue have today released their fourth single, the aptly titled ‘Breathless’. Having previously driven songs with heavier guitars and a booming rhythm section, the band are shifting towards a more nuanced approach for the new single.

Taking inspiration from Spacey Jane, Ocean Alley Stella Donnelly, with their own coastal WA flavor, ‘Breathless’ mixes grooving bass lines with shimmering guitar licks. Paired with vocalist Skye Sam’s melodic pop sensibility and smooth harmonies, the track carries listeners higher and remains stuck in their mind, long after the song is finished.

“We’re steering in the direction of indie pop yet still try to incorporate some elements within our songs for the headbangers out there. Skye’s delicate yet powerful vocals are complemented by the backbone beat, catchy leads and funky rhythmic bass, altogether creating a sound that we really love.” King Blue.

Working with Western Australian Music award winning producer & engineer Andy Lawson (Tired Lion, Eskimo Joe, Gyroscope) out of his ionic Debaser Studio, the band were able to write collaboratively with themselves before bringing the final demo to Andy. With ‘Breathless’ starting life as a mere guitar sketch, the band then added vocals, to figure out the hooks & structure.

From there they beefed it out with layers of shimmering guitars and a pulsating rhythm section. With Andy Lawson drawing the best from the band sonically, Grammy-award winning mastering engineer William Bowden (The Living End, Gotye, Spacey Jane) took the reins to add a polish to the track, completing ‘Breathless’.

“Our process of creating usually starts with a guitar sketch which we then add vocals to. After we have that as our bones for the song, we start to build and beef it out until we find some structure and it begins to feel cohesive and flow as a song. Instrumentally and lyrically, most of the music we create really depends on what’s happening in our lives at the time. It helps us to express our current or past experiences in the way that we know best.”

Ready to celebrate the return of live music to Western Australia, King Blue have curated a single release show as a highlight on both their own & punters calendars. Hitting the stage at Perth’s iconic Indian Ocean Hotel, the venue was the ideal setting for King Blue to celebrate the release of their latest single, with it playing home to many a late-night and cold pint for the band.

Joining them will be a star-studded showcase of the brightest emerging talent from WA, with Dolce Blue, Nectar & Dear Sunday all sharing the stage with them on Friday, May 20th.

“We frequent Indi Bar so often, it just feels right to play our new favorite single at a venue that we’ve grown really familiar with and comfortable with. We are so stoked to be joined by some of our incredibly talented friends on the night, it’s for sure going to be a memorable one.”
