Powerful synthscapes, soaring vocals and strong pop sensibilities sees Maison Hall. explore new territories in latest single ‘Bad Horticulture’.
This shimmering spectacle of retro-inspired dream-pop features expansive synths that weave throughout pure and direct vocals. The result is a cascade of shimmering sounds and clean drums that pull aural influences from iconic front runners Client Liaison, Total Giovanni and Touch Sensitive.
“Bad Horticulture is mainly about the tension between people’s expectations and your own self-conception. Personality is iterative, but we’re all subject to pigeonholing in others’ narratives.”
Maison Hall
Maison Hall. are a powerful Brisbane duo made up of Joe Kneipp and Ben Byron. Speaking of the music pairing, “Ben and I met in 2013. We both attended the same university college, and we played in a cover band together for a while. We had a good musical chemistry, and in a way Maison Hall. was kinda accidental – I’d always struggled in a band dynamic, but Ben’s energy was appealing. He was just very even-keeled. So we had a one-on-one jam in 2014 and pretty much instantly decided we needed to be in a band together.”

The expansive track, ‘Bad Horticulture’ is a culmination of multiple recording sessions, spanning The Aviary Studios in Abbortsford, Joe’s Bedroom and an old church in Mucklesford. Further adding to the aural and situational influences, the track was then mixed by Theo Carbo and mastered by Joe Carra (King Gizzard, Courtney Barnett, Hiatus Kaiyote).
Maison Hall.’s process of music making is transcendent and defines being pigeon-holed. Ultimately paving the way for pure creativity and artistry to flourish, they are unbound by genres, methods or purpose. Maison Hall. reclaims the artistry of music and through the process, understands the world around them.
Speaking more to this, Joe says, “I’m motivated through discipline. Music helps me understand myself, and how I think and feel about things. It happens non-linearly – these things reveal themselves over time. So I don’t hype myself up to do it, I just do it, in the same way I entrain the pattern of brushing my teeth or eating. It truly feels the same way. And look, more simply, I love Ben, I love playing music with him. That’s motivation enough – I’m happy playing to empty halls!”
