Emerging nationally through the breakout success of single ‘River Days’, South Summit continues to forge their own path, taking listeners on a twisting journey with the raw and effervescent new track ‘Runaway’.
Deftly blending influences of indie, rock & reggae, the latest musical landmark in South Summit’s journey sees ‘Runaway’ impart an expose of singer and First Nations member Zaya Reuben’s tumultuous experiences as a child, constantly moving throughout Western Australia, and the way in which this has shaped who he is today.
“Runaway is about how I moved around a lot throughout my childhood to different parts of WA and my experiences in these different environments. It highlights the various stages and explores the downsides of this change and how it has created the person I am today.”
Zaya Reuben, South Summit
Returning to work with acclaimed producer Dave Parkin (Spacey Jane, Tired Lion), it was his guidance and mastery that took the “twisted pieces” of South Summit and brought ‘Runaway’ to life.
With the track initially a demo titled “Door Repairs” – due to the presence of a maintenance man in bassist Josh Trindal’s apartment when he was laying down the foundations of the song – Parkin captured the reggae-rock vibes flowing through it, with the band eager to showcase a raw and unique side to South Summit.
“’Runaway’ was really fun to record as we got to experiment new sounds and ideas. With help from Dave Parkin, I think we really captured that rock reggae vibe which is great. A lot of us love our reggae so making this song was really enjoyable as we got to dive deeper in that category. We are over the moon with the final product and are keen to show our fans another side of South Summit.” Nemo Reuben, South Summit
To celebrate the success of previous single ‘River Days’ & in conjunction with release of ‘Runaway’ the band are excited to announce their first shows outside of WA, heading on a jaunt over east, to play free shows in Sydney and Melbourne, accompanying a hometown show in Perth.
Now signed with acclaimed national booking agency Four Tone Artists (Slowly Slowly, The VANNS, Teen Jesus and The Jean Teasers), South Summit are eager to connect their energetic and authentic live show with audiences across Australia.

Perth’s coastal sweethearts, South Summit have had an incredible 2021. The release of ‘River Days’ (produced by Dave Parkin – Spacey Jane, Tired Lion) saw the band score spins across triple j, triple j Unearthed rotation & a feature on the station’s Instagram. Spotify Australia also highlighted the band in their First Nations focused playlist ‘Original Storytellers’.
Cementing their status as not only “ones to watch”, but as an act already inspiring and captivating audiences across the country, this fervor for South Summit culminated in a SOLD OUT single launch at Perth’s iconic Jack Rabbit Slims.
A venue more accustomed to international acts & established artists, than the rapidly emerging fanbase that South Summit has impressively built in a brief amount of time, the performance was a statement of just how much potential the band holds.
