Melbourne’s Okay Dane have thrown down their loudest and most defined sounds yet with the release of their new single, ‘God Complex’. Ahead of October tour dates, the band is setting the scene for what is to be a busy few months of new music releases and attention grabbing sounds.
Signalling a new era for the band, the alt-rock trio – formerly known as Funk Dancing For Self Defence – channel frustration and pent up energy into the track, inviting the listener to have a taste of the chaos that is to come from their new EP Alienation, due out in November.
The end result of recording and throwing ideas off one another during the creative process of ‘God Complex’ is fleshed out, cathartic and ready to be unleashed live across a series of tour dates this October.

“I’m a brand new person, but I’m made of broken parts…”
“I’m a brand new person, but I’m made of broken parts,” vocalist Jake Kougioumtzis spits with attitude, as tight guitars and rhythm rumble beneath. The pacing of ‘God Complex’ makes the song instantly catchy, while the lyricism represents a more personal internal struggle.
With an energy similar to the likes of The Killers, DZ Deathrays and Violent Soho, Okay Dane have formed a strong rock foundation for themselves to build on further with the Alienation EP.
“‘God Complex’ is all about being taken advantage of and being powerless to do anything about it. It was written in a time fraught with frustration and angst, and that was a key emotion in how we wanted this to sound; it is well balanced with how fun it is to play and how hard it kicks! It’s pissed off and it’s bitter, but it’s also fun and cathartic.” Okay Dane
Building a strong following for themselves in Melbourne, Okay Dane have been consistently building their chops as dynamic live performers since 2016. Their previous single ‘Pretend’ (released earlier this year) was a perfect example and hint at what was to come with ‘God Complex’ – layered arrangements meeting melodic and rushing rock sensibilities, delivered with confidence.
Now, as the band anticipates the release of their new EP, the excitement surrounding ‘God Complex’ and its debut on stages down the East Coast and in South Australia has only strengthened with time.
