After a big couple of years since their debut single back in 2022; Western-Sydney 4 piece The Sooks have today released their long-awaited debut EP ‘Oyster Boy’, along with new single ‘Figure It Out’.
The band have been on a steady trajectory over the last 12 months, with previous ‘Oyster Boy’ singles ‘Never Gonna Go’, ‘Sunburnt Smile’, ‘Burn Me Out’ & ‘Young and Alive’ putting the band on the map with significant airplay and editorial support.
‘Figure It Out’, the latest single from ‘Oyster Boy’, builds on the easy-going, catchy sound the band have developed on past releases – perfect for a day by the beach, or a sweaty sing-a-long at one of the bands live sets. For the first time ever, bass player Jeremy Cassar came to the table with lyrics and vocals – much to the band’s surprise.
“I wrote the song while on a cruise with my mates. I was on this boys trip, kickin’ it back with my friends, but, as corny as it might be, I missed my girlfriend. Midway through a big night out, I remember the chorus melody and lyrics just came to life in my head, and I knew I had to jot it down asap. So I ran back to my room where it was more quiet, and quickly recorded a voice memo so that I wouldn’t forget it.
It was probably a month or so later when I was randomly scrolling on my phone that I found the voice memo again and realized I was onto something. So the next week, I brought it to the boys and we fleshed it out and were really stoked with what we had! The boys were really shocked that I (the bassist who usually doesn’t even want to sing backing vocals) would write and sing a song we all liked. Who would have thought a drunken melody would turn into an actual song we’d end up recording?
‘Figure It Out’ is essentially a love song that’s about missing your girlfriend or significant other when you’re apart and being excited to see them again. It’s one of those classic cheesy love songs but I reckon it works really well because of how easy it is to sing along with and how catchy it is.” JEREMY CASSAR, THE SOOKS
Working alongside producer Jack Nigro (Skegss, The Terry’s, Rum Jungle, DMA’s, Pacific Avenue), with mastering from Darren Ziesing (Lime Cordiale, The Buoys, Flume), the EP is a culmination of work from the band over the past few years.
“We’ve been working on this EP over the past year and a half with our producer, Jack Nigro, at Sonora studios. The EP is basically a compilation of tracks about being young, going out, and hanging out with your mates. It’s about love, relationships, friendships, and the ups and downs that come with that.”
