Indie 4-piece About Yesterday have returned with their second ever single; a dynamic, grunge-tinged indie rock track titled ‘Landline’, out today.
About Yesterday formed after leaving behind their previous band Detour, releasing their debut single ‘Bound To Lose’ under the new name in August of last year. The band have reemerged with a confident new energy and sense of maturity found in their songwriting – with ‘Landline’ pushing the band to new heights.
Mixed by Tristian Sturmer (Pretty Uglies, Lazy Haze, Rat Salad) with mastering from George Georgiadis (The Dreggs, Matt Corby, Hockey Dad, Old Mervs), ‘Landline’ sways and weaves between styles as the track moves between verse and chorus.
Laying the groundwork for the track with a laid back, reggae infused-groove before cranking the amps in the chorus with some Weezer-esque guitars and anthemic vocal melodies – About Yesterday shows off a promising stylistic range from the young WA band.
Lyrically the track looks at the two sides of selfish behaviour; the insecurity that causes it in the first place, and the fall out for those affected.
“‘Landline’ was written drawing from themes of being insecure. We wanted it to be based on how an insecure person treats people rather than how the person that is on the receiving end of their treatment feels. We aimed to highlight the struggle of self doubt and lack of self esteem whilst also highlighting the type of environment this can foster for someone close to them.”
ANNALISE FIELDING, ABOUT YESTERDAY
Originally working together as a three-piece – ‘Landline’ was written during a jam in quick succession (as all good songs are), but as frontwoman Annalise Feilding comments, “there was something missing” from the final product.
Shortly after, new guitarist Brady Jansen joined the band and added that final piece to the puzzle; “Safe to say this is when it finally came together as a song, we felt like we had finally molded it into what we wanted it to be.”
During their time About Yesterday as well as their previous band Detour, the 4-piece have seen plenty of support already on the stage and from industry tastemakers.
Sharing the stage with bands like Sly Withers, Homebrand, Artfool and Increment – the band have had plenty of live experience, including slots at festivals such as Hyperfest and Fairbridge Festival.
They’ve had previous radio play on triple J, Triple J Unearthed, 4ZZZ and 89.7FM – and were even runner ups for WAM’s Grand Prize as a high school band in back in 2021.
