Hot on the heels of the stunning ‘Alter Ego’ released in January, Sydney’s Evie Irie continues to raise the bar, returning now with a candid coming-of-age track titled ‘Mercedes Medicated’.
A beautiful, raw and expressive track which details some of the dark and difficult sentiments linked to adolescence and young adulthood as experienced by Evie, ‘Mercedes Medicated’ paints a clear picture of how tricky it can be to navigate these periods. On the meaning behind this sonic supercut, Evie commented:
“‘Mercedes Medicated’ was written at a time of my life where I had A LOT of existential angst, I struggled with depression and anxiety in my late teens and this song embodies exactly how I was feeling towards the world, myself and my relationships at that time.” EVIE IRIE
Written alongside Xavier Dunn (Peking Duk, Jack River, Pitbull, Carla Wehbe, Client Liaison) and mixed by Scott Horscroft (Silverchair, DMA’S, The Presets, Empire of the Sun, Middle Kids, Allday, Tkay Maidza), ‘Mercedes Medicated’ is as gorgeous in its production as it is in its songwriting.
Characterised by a tight arrangement of synths, distorted guitars, a strong driving beat, and instances of fuzzy vocal effects, the track is a masterclass in bright, upbeat modern pop.
Packing a lifetime of music career experience into the first two decades of her life alone, Evie Irie is a charming young star primed to put all of her passion, energy and talent towards her love for music.
Having signed her first major record and publishing at 16 years old with management from Troy Carter (Lady Gaga, Megan Trainor), and having sold out shows throughout LA, New York, Sydney and more, Evie has found a new connection to her art and her career, reentering the scene now as an independent artist.
“I’ve found my late teens and early 20’s to be pretty difficult and confusing. Maybe because making music is not necessarily a job parents dream of for their kids or maybe it’s because of the scary state of the world, or wondering who you are and how you fit into all of it…
Most likely it’s a pretty cocktail of the combination! We’re all out here trying our best to thrive in the whirlwind of life and sometimes that means coping by escaping reality in the means of desiring material distractions or fleeting moments.” EVIE IRIE
