Returning with their first new music for 2025, Brisbane’s indie pop band Alta Falls has just released a new single titled ‘Calamity’, a vulnerable and heart-wrenching track wrapped up in the band’s ever-so groovy, 80s-inspired style of synthy electro-pop. Produced by Aidan Hogg (G Flip, Jaguar Jonze) and mixed by Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy, Amy Shark, The Buoys, Alex Lahey), ‘Calamity’ is an expression of misery and frustration;
“Calamity reflects the emotional turmoil of a small issue spiraling out of control. It’s a plea for understanding and balance, capturing the raw tension and the struggle to make things right.” NATHANAEL HUBBARD
Combining this incredibly raw sentiment with a vibrant and shimmering style of songwriting, the band strike a memorable balance, and a recognisable Alta Falls sound. Speaking to the process of shaping ‘Calamity’ into the song we hear today, Alta Falls remarked on the natural ease with which the project came together, reflecting the tight dynamic and creative collaboration within the band:
“The song came together like most of ours do. I come up with the initial chords and structure on the piano, and Nathanael comes up with some early melody and lyric ideas. We then take that to the studio and workshop beats, bass lines, and start to layer the keys and synth parts. Then, we finalise guitars, lyrics, melodies, and harmonies, before getting into the mixing process.” MATTHEW GREEN
Off the back of a jam-packed 2024 which saw them play shows in states all across the country, including their first sold out show in Sydney, Alta Falls will be playing a live set in Perth this month, performing the new single alongside a stack of other new and beloved tracks.
