Following on from her hit release ‘Laila’, a largely acoustic pop ballad dropped in late 2024, Evie Irie returns now with ‘Alter Ego’, a dreamy, beat-driven alt pop song which exhibits a whole different side to the Sydney singer-songwriter.
A track about finding balance between two drastically different sides of oneself and one’s life, ‘Alter Ego’ explores Evie’s experience of being torn between the two ways of being, but ultimately finding joy and power in them, and celebrating this contrasting self;
“The meaning behind ‘Alter Ego’ is rooted in the duality of my life and the way it constantly shifts between extremes. I split my time between LA and Sydney, Australia, and the contrast is very Hannah Montana-coded. ‘Alter Ego’ captures my internal dialogue, where my dreams and reality collide. It’s fun, bold, and unapologetically pop… I wanted to express the tension between my two worlds and two minds. There’s something both confronting and exhilarating about balancing fierce ambition and drive while staying true to who you are. That collision is what lies at the heart of this song.” EVIE IRIE
Working on the track at The Grove Studios in Sydney, Evie hustled alongside a brilliant handful of fellow Aussie icons to shape ‘Alter Ego’ into its final form; the process included writing collaboratively with E^ST, as well as mixing from Scott Horscroft (Silverchair, DMA’S, The Presets, Empire of the Sun, Middle Kids, Allday, Tkay Maidza). After hours of redoing and refining, caught amongst the fun and chaos of it all, the dream team landed on something truly special.
“I’m smiling just thinking about making ‘Alter Ego’. This song was such a fun and rewarding experience, filled with a lot of Australian magic and talent from the collaborator E^ST, Xavier Dunn, Jackson Wiebe, and Scott Horscroft who all worked on this record with me. I wanted it to feel pop while keeping a sense of rawness and authenticity.
We spent hours fine-tuning the BPMs, jumping around the studio to find that perfect pocket, and layering live instruments to create a beautiful balance. The best part was collaborating with people who shared the same passion for pushing the music to its fullest potential. Every time we thought it was done, we’d find new ideas to elevate it even further. The whole experience of this song has been fulfilling and exciting, I’m so proud of where it’s landed.” EVIE IRIE
Having played a heap of headline shows across both North America and Australia, as well as landing support slots since her teenage years for both national and international superstars (including Bastille, Sigrid and Amy Shark), Evie Irie has, at the age of 21, already established a most impressive name for herself in the music scene.
She has over 25 million streams on Spotify and 11.7 million plays on Apple Music, and has previously had her music featured on a variety of TV shows including The Bold Type (Freeform), The Block (Channel 9), The Rookie (ABC America) and more, as well as her song ‘Hello World’ as the theme track for the Netflix animated movie Back To The Outback.
Returning now with ‘Alter Ego’ to display a whole new facet of her skill, creative personality and artistry, Evie Irie reiterates her standing as the people’s pop princess who just gets better and better with each release.
