Creating music that wraps threads of nostalgia in with exciting fresh perspective, Melbourne indie artist Ruby Mae has returned with new music to bring us further into the second half of the year, with the emotive track ‘Hurricane’.
Following on from ‘Keeper’ and ‘All My Brothers Have Girlfriends’, this song is another step forward in Ruby Mae’s evolution as a songwriter and musician. Already having established a reputation for herself locally as a dynamic force to come out of the Melbourne scene, Ruby Mae has delivered a strong chapter in this creative journey that is still revealing itself.
‘Hurricane’ was a song inspired by themes of all-consuming love – the type of romance normally maintained within the pages of books; the type of romance built on passion. Originally written as a slower acoustic track, ‘Hurricane’ ended up coming together with Ruby Mae recording with producer/engineer Stephen Mowat (WILSN, Gretta Ray) at both Soundpark and The Aviary studios in Melbourne.
“I loved the idea of using something like a hurricane to explain the impact of a person. Strong, dangerous, powerful, destructive. But not being afraid of that because you love them. And sometimes love blinds you.
When I went to record it with Stephen, we thought we needed another faster song for the album so we played around with making this song double time. Then we added in the drum beat at the start which brought in some pop elements. It’s definitely different to anything I have ever released before but I like that about it.” RUBY MAE
Releasing her debut EP We Sing Together Or Not At All in 2019, Ruby Mae has wasted no time since in developing a concrete body of work that audiences have been falling for. Ruby Mae’s music feels primed for a coming-of-age soundtrack; the balance of crushing lyricism with loftier, guitar-driven music has the ability to entice, envelop and charm. It translates beautifully to the live space too, with Ruby Mae cementing herself as one of Melbourne’s best fresh voices, selling out beloved venues including Stay Gold, The Grace Darling Hotel and The Gasometer; while performing alongside artists like Semantics, The Terrys and Suzi.
Having enjoyed strong community radio support across the likes of RRR, Radio Adelaide and FBi Radio; as well as plays on Triple J, ABC and KEXP Radio in Seattle, Ruby Mae’s sphere of influence is consistently expanding with each release.
