A voice that captivates, a stage presence that endears, and a body of work that is a great example of natural songwriting talent and charm; Central Coast musician and performer JOEL LEGGETT presents new work in his third studio album, DON’T WAIT.
A collection of music that captures the essence of his talent as a storyteller and artist, the album is a beautifully fleshed out twelve track run of indie music, flecked with roots and folk charm.
To date, fans have been given tastes of the record across a string of strong singles; from the dynamic ‘CUP OF TEA’ and ‘MAIZY’, to the immersive ‘BIRDHOUSE’ and ‘NICE GUY’. Experienced as part of the wider project, this is music that blends together with ease.
The album features songwriting vignettes from right across Leggett’s career; title track ‘DON’T WAIT’ stands as one of the oldest compositions on the record, re-discovered by Leggett after eight years spent in the vault.
Reworked and recorded properly, the song stands as one of the album’s pure highlights. As Leggett describes, “It is a song I wrote in my late days of high school that got lost in the vault for many years. …Although this song doesn’t have a whole lot of meaning, I think the story is pretty cool and it was such a nice experience to diver back into that nostalgic teen self, despite whatever he was going through.”
The album recording process took place between Byron Bay’s Alleyway Studios and Sonora Studios on the Central Coast. For the project, Leggett worked with Manning Allen-Scott (The Good Love) on production and mixing, with additional mixing provided by Jack Nigro (The Terrys); additional production by Will Hearn and mastering by Darren Ziesing (Millennium Mastering) and Toby Wells.
“This body of work represents a genre balance I have found between my early work and a direction I plan to take in the future. I spent over 2 years writing this album, which called for a lot of chopping and changing. As a creative i find myself inspired by so many different sounds / genres so sometimes it can be hard to narrow down a collection of songs in an album and make it flow.
There are elements of this album that indicate a more alternative approach to folk which I have found to be very rewarding and feels more ‘me’. A great example of this approach would be ‘Monday People’ ‘Sun Bubble’ and ‘Maizy’. I feel very content with my final product and I’m very proud to introduce my 3rd album ‘Don’t Wait’. ”
