Purée deliver nothing short of indie-rock perfection with new single ‘I Guess You Were Right’

Adelaide band Purée have just released their latest single, ‘I Guess You Were Right’. A heartfelt and high-energy indie pop/rock tune, the single explores the heartbreak of “being on the receiving end of someone who had outgrown a relationship,” according to the band.

The song’s lyrical content being framed, therefore, within the perspective of the one being left behind (You said: ‘I don’t wanna live this life and I am built for more,’ / So you packed your bags, slammed the front door), ‘I Guess You Were Right’ leans into the pain, rather than shying away from it.

Its energy is uplifted flawlessly, however, through its sonic qualities. Frontman Matthew Holland’s gravelly vocals are as emotive as they are technically impressive, effortlessly complementing the message behind the song itself.

Bright, echoey guitar tones from lead guitarist Jack Foale, alongside bass guitar and gorgeous backing vocals from Mackenzie Adcock, add layers of warmth to the track; tied in marvellously of course by drummer Liam Woolcock’s dynamic percussion.

Vulnerable, expressive, and absolutely oozing the energy of a song you’d find on the soundtrack of a coming-of-age film, ‘I Guess You Were Right’ is a song which Purée have been performing in their live set for quite some time before today’s release of a studio version.

Having fostered such a deep connection to the song through performing it live, the band threw all of their love and energy into perfecting and maintaining its energy in the recording process:

“We were experimenting with synth and samples a lot more on this project. Mackenzie was diving far deeper into synth which gave the song something we weren’t able to give it with just our instruments. It was harder than we imagined to capture the emotion and the feeling it gives us playing live, in the studio, but after we settled into it and really felt it out it became easier and is probably our favourite track we’ve put out…” PURÉE

Recorded and mixed by Matthew Cooper of Treetop Studios (Heartline, Indiago, The Effends), followed by mastering from Joseph Carra of Crystal Mastering (Genesis Owusu, Courtney Barnett, The Teskey Brothers), ‘I Guess You Were Right’ is set to lead Purée into an exciting new musical era.

In celebration of this, the band will be embarking on an intimate single launch tour, spanning two dates in Adelaide, as well as heading up north to Melbourne for an interstate adventure:

“We are launching ‘I Guess You Were Right’ in our city, Adelaide and couldn’t be more excited to get over to Melbourne for our second time interstate. We are finishing off with a show in our hometown in the Adelaide Hills. We are new to tours but we got the bug from our first interstate show last year… we can’t wait for more this year, hopefully seeing other cities too.”  PURÉE
