Western-Sydney 4 piece The Sooks keep the ball rolling with the summery new track ‘Sunburnt Smile’, a hook-filled single that celebrates individuality, and the idea of creating your own life path without the influence of others.
On ‘Sunburnt Smile’ The Sooks prove they’ve got their feel-good, festival-ready sound down to a tee. Hitting you with bright, catchy guitar lines right from the get go, the track takes a simplistic approach structurally, doubling down on huge sing-a-long melodies that are sure to be fan favourites at future live appearances.
The band found inspiration for the track during a night out in Sydney, after overhearing a particularly friendly patron offer some advice to one of their friends.
“The song was mainly inspired by a night out at The Oxford Art Factory. There was a super drunk guy just walking up to groups of people and buying them drinks and just saying random stuff. And I (Corey) remember hearing him saying to one of my mates ‘skip some stones, be who you wanna’ and that struck a chord with me, and I just straight up took those lines and used them in the chorus of the song. And really, that’s what the song’s about - it's about being the person you really want to be, and forging your own path in the world, and not caring about what other people think.” - COREY FITZSIMONS, THE SOOKS
Working once again with producer-extraordinaire Jack Nigro (Skegss, The Terry’s, Rum Jungle, DMA’s, Pacific Avenue), and Darren Ziesing (Lime Cordiale, The Buoys, Flume) on mastering, the band went into the recording process with a mix bag of material - opting to glue all the best individual sections they had together to ensure the track hits throughout its full duration.
“This writing process for the song took a while. We had two different songs, but we felt one had a good chorus and bad verse, and the other had a good verse but a bad chorus, so we just put the good parts of both songs together, and we got this song out of it. We recorded the song in the same recording sessions as our last single ‘Never Gonna Go’, and feel it has that same feel-good summer festival vibe.”
