The road Hollow Coves have been on to get to this point, where they celebrate the release of their second studio album Nothing To Lose, has been one marked by many moments of self-discovery; creative rejuvenation and fresh inspiration.
Between songwriters and musicians Matt Carins and Ryan Henderson, the music of Hollow Coves represents a heartfelt, tonally rich blend of indie-folk music that international and Australian audiences have been loving. With Nothing To Lose, Hollow Coves take the strong foundations of their sound, meticulously laid across years’ worth of releases, and amplify it with an evolved blend of storytelling and musical influences; 1 billion global streams, 200 million YouTube views & 2.4 million Shazams.
Nothing To Lose was recorded at Rainbow Valley Studios with Matt Corby (Budjerah, Sia, Tash Sultana), the ARIA-winning performer coming onboard to produce and engineer the album, as well as co-write three of the tracks with Hollow Coves, Alex Henriksson and Chris Collins (Middle Kids, Tyne-James Organ, Gretta Ray).
Featuring singles including ‘Photographs’ and ‘See You Soon’, Nothing To Lose collects stories and observations that have resonated with Carins and Henderson on a deep level.
“After these co-writes ended up going so well and us being stoked with the direction it was going in, we all thought it would be great to work on the whole album together. Ryan and I also had a bunch of other songs that were already written from our own studio in Currumbin Valley. With Matt Corby producing the whole record and playing drums, Bass and other instruments, it definitely brought out a different colour/flavour to our music.”
“Going into this album, we wanted to challenge ourselves creatively and get into a space where we didn’t put too much pressure on the songs. To do this, we both decided we’d just write separately and add songs to our dropbox. If there were any of the songs that we both resonated with then we would work on finishing them together. We also wanted to make this album a little differently from our previous work to help our live show have more energy and vibe to it.” HOLLOW COVES
As Hollow Coves explain, Nothing To Lose is an opportunity for them as the artists, as well as the listener, to take a beat – unwind and try to switch off for a moment. In a world where so much of our media and cultural consumption is based around toxicity and negativity, Hollow Coves are aiming to provide an avenue of escape and nurturing for all those seeking it.
“The whole record is based on our personal experiences of trying to slow down and realise that living simply is the best for our souls. The world is in such a rush these days and with that there’s a lot of stress and anxieties. Our lifestyle from living on the Gold Coast and having such a great community made us naturally write about topics that will hopefully inspire the listener to think about what’s actually important to them.” HOLLOW COVES
The release of Nothing To Lose coincides with the final countdown to the next chapter of Hollow Coves’ life on the road. With an extensive run of shows set to take Carins and Henderson right around the world with their music, Nothing To Lose stands to reunite the duo with their loyal fan base across Europe and the UK, as well as North America and Canada, through into the Australian winter.
Having already developed an enviable live presence for themselves courtesy of countless international tours and festival appearances at the likes of Osheaga, La Cigale, Pukkelpop, Boardmasters; as well as at home at events including NYE On The Hill, Lost Lands and Woodford Folk Festival, Hollow Coves have cemented their position as one of Australia’s most dynamic live exports.
Across their catalogue, Hollow Covers have accumulated over one billion global streams, have been supported extensively by the likes of Triple J and Triple J Unearthed, as well as Paste, Billboard, Clash, and The Sunday Times. Their music has achieved further widespread recognition thanks to lucrative syncs on US TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, American Idol and 9-1-1 Lonestar; positioning Hollow Coves as more than just a buzz group, but one with proven longevity potential.
