Sydney pop-punk group Refinery Drive have delivered a blistering new release for 2024, titled ‘Fool Me Twice’. The track is the second drop from Refinery Drive, who made their debut earlier this year with the fantastic single ‘Promises’. With ‘Fool Me Twice’, Refinery Drive continues to build upon that momentum, showing listeners the shining potential that is only just being tapped into.
Like ‘Promises’, Refinery Drive worked with producer Lachlan Cronin in bringing ‘Fool Me Twice’ to life at the Central Coast’s Sonora Studios. As the band describes, ‘Fool Me Twice’ is a song that navigates frustration and manipulation tied up in relationships.
“It is about the frustration of repeatedly trusting someone who is easily manipulated, only to watch them shift blame and lose their sense of self. It captures the heartbreak of investing in someone who continuously lets you down and changes who they are, depending on the company they keep.” REFINERY DRIVE
Creating ‘Fool Me Twice’ with Cronin saw the band step confidently into a sonic territory that kept the pop-punk essence of ‘Promises’, but explored more alternative and pop elements than they had tried before. Wanting to simply create a track that balanced simplicity and engaging arrangements, Refinery Drive ultimately delivered a final result that is fresh and exciting for the band and listeners alike.
“‘Fool Me Twice’ was a major step forward for us as individuals and as a band, as we used this to explore a wider array of genres branching out from the pop-punk sound. …When writing and recording ‘Fool Me Twice’ we wanted to create a song that had a good balance of simplicity while still being technically demanding, allowing all of us to feel like we’d put a piece of ourselves into the song.” REFINERY DRIVE
Refinery Drive have been developing their sound and expanding on their set of influences, which have seen them draw from groups including Tonight Alive, Paramore and New Found Glory.
Having cut their teeth supporting the likes of DZ Deathrays and The Buoys, Refinery Drive have evolved in recent years, becoming the most dynamic and charismatic version of themselves – driven by an unbeatable fusion of attitude and performance power.
They have received support from the likes of Triple J and within the community radio space, fuelling the band’s vision to create music that comes packed with emotional punch and clever musicianship to match.
