2024 has been a fruitful year for Melbourne songwriter and musician, RUBY MAE. The release of tracks ‘Keeper’ and the more recent ‘Hurricane’ have positioned the artist as one to watch – a naturally talented storyteller with wry wit and confidence to match, Ruby Mae’s musical output has pointed towards more exciting projects still to be revealed.
As we head into the summer, Ruby Mae shows that she’s not stopping, with the release of her new single, simply titled ‘Dickhead’. What started as an acoustic track, soon grew into a song that had music to match the energy of the song’s message.
Recorded between The Aviary Studios and Soundpark in Melbourne, Ruby Mae worked with producer Stephen Mowat (Gretta Ray, WILSN) in bringing the track to life.
“It’s punchy, direct, blunt and we needed to make sure that was reinforced by the band. That’s when we added in the heavier drive to the chorus, turning it into this homage to my love of 2000s emo punk. (As much as it can get for a Ruby Mae song.)” RUBY MAE
Described as a song that navigates battling between holding one’s tongue and being honest, Ruby Mae delivers a moment of catharsis for listeners who may be able to relate to this sort of tension.
“Many people told me silence is a statement, but I decided silence would be way too easy on him. It isn’t really my style anyway. It’s a fun song to sing, very cathartic and I feel like it’s relatable. This man always joked about me writing a song about him, so, here it is ya dickhead.”
